故事发生在清末民初，时群雄并起，外忧内患。父辈靠绿林起家的阮庭深（谢贤 饰）乘火车回家途中邂逅祖辈曾为前清大官的显赫千金庄梦蝶（汪明荃 饰）。郎才女貌，二人一见倾心。然阮、庄两家虽比邻而居，却因身份悬殊而势不两立。
梦蝶之兄庄有为出于自身利益，替妹妹许下一桩婚事。得知详情的梦蝶找到庭深，在阮家兄弟的帮助下，她和庭深双双出走北平。两个青年男女的私奔激化了阮、庄两家的矛盾，而另一方面，深爱梦蝶的天涯（吕良伟 饰）也痴心不死。庭深和梦蝶的爱情之路注定从一开始便崎岖坎坷……

Because of her father's inappropriate behavior, Zeynep, a hotel housekeeper, spends hellish nights. The only person with whom she has a relationship is Mustafa, a young man who works in the same hotel and who is interested in Zeynep. Zeynep is trying to escape from the vicious circle in which she finds herself. In another part of the city, Selcuk, a sound technician, is struggling with the guilt he feels over the recent death of his wife.
