沼田家是一个四口家庭。父亲孝助（伊丹十三 饰）和母亲千贺子（由紀さおり 饰）对两个念书的儿子给予了殷切希望。长子慎一（辻田順一 饰）学习用功，成功考上了一流的西武高中。这之后一家人又将希望全部寄托在正读初三的次子茂之（宮川一朗太 饰）身上。
