龙雁飞（许冠文 饰）是一个著名的武侠小说家，十年了都没有新的作品面世了，不过以往的畅销作品仍然带给他客观的收入，生活无忧。他的女儿Sophia（杨千嬅 饰）是个早已到了适婚年龄，但她恋爱运甚差，只想找一个真正可以过日子的人结婚，其实她一直暗恋自己的上司——花花公子Frankie（刘青云 饰）。Frankie因为意外要搬到Sophia的家住，龙雁飞看见自己心爱的女儿被Frankie当工人使唤，心里很不是滋味，便对Frankie充满了敌意，但在后来的相处中，两个男人又成了知己……。该剧讲述了跨越不同时期，在隐形战线上的人民英雄是如何不惧怕任何危险，不计较个人牺牲，甚至不顾人民内部的误解和生死裁决，都不暴露个人真实身份，至死不渝，与敌人周旋到底的英雄故事。。three distant and diverse existences caught in a same tension: the search for their own identity and the sense of ''being'' in a present of continuous transformation.
