愈战愈勇的老牌男星罗伯特·雷德福将在片中有一番艰辛的海上漂流，勇对劈面巨浪一个人撑满全场。除去奇幻元素，本片几乎堪称一部“老年版的《少年派的奇幻漂流》”。
之所以说雷德福要独自撑满全场，是因为本片有且只有雷德福一人主演。他在睡梦中遭遇了轮船撞击集装箱的厄运，船舱进水修复无能，导航和无线电报废，最后只能弃船而去，在皮筏上生死未卜。面对惊涛骇浪、倾盆暴雨，在皮筏四周逡巡觅食的鲨鱼们，这位原本足智多谋的老水手发现死亡正在不断向自己逼近。
