桂美（杨惠姗）孤身从南京来到台湾寻找未婚夫未果，暂住表姐家中，却被当下等佣人对待，为摆脱寄人篱下的生活，她委身下嫁遭妻子遗弃的中年男人侯永年（李立群），成为三个孩子的继母，可是因为侯永年的嗜赌如命兼外养女人，令她犹如刚出狼窝又入虎穴。
