本片根据夏目漱石的同名原作改编。。孟小军的全家遭遇了一场惨烈的车祸，他们骑的摩托车被卡车撞翻，孟小军受了重伤，年仅4岁的女儿严重脑损伤，而妻子则当场死亡。女儿必须在一周之内做一台昂贵的手术才能保住性命，手术的花费要十二万，作为小县城的修车工，孟小军根本无法在一周之内凑到钱。所以，走投无路的他听从了太平间管理员老张的建议：打算将妻子的遗体卖到农村，与一个刚刚死去的年轻人结成阴婚。
