之所以说雷德福要独自撑满全场，是因为本片有且只有雷德福一人主演。他在睡梦中遭遇了轮船撞击集装箱的厄运，船舱进水修复无能，导航和无线电报废，最后只能弃船而去，在皮筏上生死未卜。面对惊涛骇浪、倾盆暴雨，在皮筏四周逡巡觅食的鲨鱼们，这位原本足智多谋的老水手发现死亡正在不断向自己逼近。
本片在戛纳电影节展映时获得好评如潮，不少外媒称这是“雷德福演艺生涯又一次令人难忘的精彩表现”。。
