卡索(约翰尼·德普 Johnny Depp 饰)着迷于收藏离奇古怪的珍稀书籍。这种才华令富翁巴尔坎（弗兰克·兰格拉 Frank Langella 饰）大为赏识。他派给卡索一个艰巨的任务——寻找一本叫《第九道门》的古书，并鉴定他手中那本的真假。这本书在世界上仅存3本，剩下的两本，分别流落到了葡萄牙和法国。
